Is your server running? Then you had better go catch it!
No, seriously, is your server up? Is it process data or is currently bound by resource contention because of a memory hungry application and you can logon to figure out what’s going on? Has it taken on a different persona this week as compared to last week when you configured it by hand or with some home grown “scripts”? Can it handle the projected increase in traffic this year as compared to last year? Do you add more processors? Disks to increase IOPS? Or do you sit and wait for impending doom?
What do you do? Better yet. What do you know and how do you know it?
Knowing is everything when it comes to managing infrastructure. While we were making light of how a lot of infrastructure is managed and the thoughts that go through an Infrastructure Director or Engineer’s brains we’re not really not kidding. It’s no laughing matter when a system goes down, impacts customers, and suddenly you’ve got shoulder surfers foot tapping asking, “When is it going to be back up?” Everything we mentioned are serious, real world challenges faced by any organization with an IT foot print; no matter the scale.
If you find yourself identifying with any of these issues then it’s time to take charge of your infrastructure.
Get away from spending money on hardware that will only realistically last you 3 to 4 years. Stop manually provisioning and configuring systems from gold disks and cobbled together scripts. Put Nagios out in the pasture and start using something with real intelligence & capabilities. Start working with cloud infrastructure so you can automatically provision and configure systems that are defined by software. Truly make your software applications elastic by responding to the increasing or decreasing work loads using auto-scaling virtual machine instance groups. Use real monitoring and performance metrics collection software, like Prometheus to take your operations from being one part reactive and two parts guess work to being proactive and all-knowing.
If this is the kind of infrastructure you want to create, manage, and run your organization on then look no further. We’re experts in this. You name it, we’ve done it and we can’t wait to help you!
